When a wealthy visitor to a small Mississippi town is found murdered, suspicion quickly centers on a black Philadelphia police detective (Sidney Poitier) who is just passing through. The white police chief (Rod Steiger) soon learns that Poitier's character is an expert homicide detective and enlists him to help solve the case.
